Program Overview

Taught from a Christian worldview, Point University’s Associate of Science in Medical Assisting degree equips students with the administrative and clinical skills needed so they can excel in the evolving healthcare field. Offered entirely online (with the exception of an on-ground clinical externship), the program’s comprehensive curriculum is designed to help students develop foundational knowledge in front office management, medical terminology, and patient safety. Graduates will also develop the competencies needed to:

  • Employ appropriate medical terminology to communicate with office personnel, physicians, and other medical staff.
  • Utilize technology to document patient medical records and maintain patient privacy according to HIPAA and other federal regulations.
  • Master front office functions, including medical coding and billing and insurance coding.
  • Pursue post-program certification, such as the Certified Medical Assistant credential from the National Center for Competency Testing.

For students looking to enter the field in one year or less, Point University offers a 25-credit hour Medical Assisting Certificate program. This eight-course program, which includes an on-ground clinical externship, educates students in medical terminology, medical systems and procedures, and medical ethics so they can work both on the front line and behind the scenes in a healthcare organization. Students looking to further their education and increase their career opportunities can transfer their earned credits towards Point’s 100% online Associate of Science in Medical Assisting, and then onto the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration.

While a certificate is an excellent entry point into the medical assisting field, earning an Associate of Science in Medical Assisting degree demonstrates commitment to the profession, and leads to better job opportunities and a higher salary.

Program Outcomes

Gain the skills needed to be a leader in the healthcare field with Point University’s Associate of Science in Medical Assisting or Medical Assisting Certificate. With an emphasis on medical terminology, front office functions, and medical coding and billing, our online programs prepare students to make an immediate impact assisting doctors and nurses with administrative, technical, and clinical duties. Upon completion of the associate or certificate program, students will be prepared to sit for post-program certifications, including the Certified Medical Assistant credential from the National Center for Competency Testing.

Both medical assisting programs include an on-ground clinical externship at an approved facility. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to launch successful careers in roles such as:

  • Clerical and Medical Billing Specialist
  • Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Doctor’s Office Assistant
  • Medical Clinic Receptionist

Although aspiring medical assistants can enter the field in one year or less with Point’s Medical Assisting Certificate, earning an Associate of Science in Medical Assisting is highly valued by employers and an excellent step towards greater career prospects, job responsibilities, and a higher salary.
